Last week we had a really great APPLE HACK: UNLOCKING THE APPLE BIOMASS webinar hosted by PRO CIVIS Foundation!

The event gathered over 65 participants who could get valuable knowledge on various topics related to valorization of apple biomass!

We are very excited to share with you key takeaways from the presentations:

  • Aalto Anna introduced the BioBoosters project, aimed at boosting the green transition in the Baltic Sea region.
  • Joanna Gil dived into apple processing and extraction techniques, including vacuum drying, foam drying, and osmotic dehydration. She highlighted modern solutions for product quality and nutrient retention, showcasing methods like ultrasound-assisted and microwave-assisted extraction for maximum recovery of valuable compounds.
  • Uko Bleive shared practical insights on valorization options for apple biomass and pomace, advocating for a low-input processing approach. He discussed fractionating apple pomace post-juice pressing and developing a pilot-scale residue processing unit to stabilize and enhance pomace products like jams and marmalades.
  • Barbara Domagała focused on cascade extraction of low-quality apples for cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. She explained how this method maximizes valuable compounds, highlighting the health benefits of apple extracts (antioxidant properties) and their use in functional beverages like energy and beauty drinks.
  • Udayakumar Veerabagu explored converting apple biomass into high-value platform chemicals as sustainable alternatives to fossil-based resources. He outlined the three-step biorefining process and the potential of carbohydrate derivatives, lignin, and organic acids in bioplastics, biofuels, and pharmaceuticals.
